Rallying Together: Hyalite Elementary Joins the "Can the Griz!" Challenge

There’s something magical about this time of year at Hyalite Elementary. The air feels crisp, the mountains are dusted with snow, and our community comes alive with a spirit of giving. This week, we’re diving into that spirit headfirst with the Can the Griz! food drive—and we’re inviting all Hyalite families to be part of this incredible effort!

For those new to the tradition, Can the Griz! is more than just a rivalry between Montana State University and the University of Montana (though, let’s be honest, GO BOBCATS!). It’s a chance for our entire community to come together to support local food banks and provide for families who could use a little extra help. And this year, Hyalite is ready to make a BIG impact.

Here’s how you can help:

🗓️ Now through Thursday, November 21st🛍️ Drop off your nonperishable food donations at one of these locations:

• Hyalite’s front office

• The playground during morning drop-off

Not sure what to bring? Food banks especially appreciate kid-friendly items like mac & cheese, single-serve snacks, oatmeal, granola bars, and juice boxes. These easy-to-eat foods go a long way in making sure no child goes hungry.

But wait, it gets better!

To cheer us on, Montana State University’s very own mascot, Champ, will be visiting Hyalite Elementary on Friday,

November 22nd, at 8:00 AM! If you’ve never seen a room full of kids light up at the sight of a giant, furry Bobcat, let me tell you—it’s pure joy. Champ’s visit is the perfect way to celebrate the amazing contributions of our Hyalite community.

Why does this matter?

The Can the Griz! challenge is about more than food—it’s about connection. It’s about teaching our kids the value of giving back and showing them that even small acts of kindness can create a ripple effect of good. Whether it’s a box of granola bars or a bag of oatmeal, every single item makes a difference.
